The Palace of Fine Arts was built for the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915.It was built of wood and covered in staff, a mixture of burlap and plaster. It was meant to last a year and collapse. But San Franciscans knew a good thing when they saw it.
The Exploratorium is now built behind the Palace to provide a draw for tourists and locals alike.

I agree Mich! The Palace was one of the highlights of my visit to San Francisco. You, of course, were the best and most memorable. (I’m still mad that you saw the parrots on signal hill and I didn’t)
